‘Constant and severe pain’: Jimmy Barnes confirms hiatus

Aussie rock legend Jimmy Barnes is recovering after urgent surgery to treat chronic back pain.

In an update shared on her Instagram page, Barnes’ daughter Elly-May shared a photo of Barnes in his hospital bed.

She wrote: “Hey everyone it’s @ellymaybarnes, my dadda is out of surgery and awake. The doctors are very happy, Thanks for all the well wishes”.

The 66-year-old was forced to cancel his summer tour for urgent back and hip surgery after suffering “excruciating pain” for months.

Fans rallied to boost his spirits by sending his Blue Christmas album to the top of the ARIA charts earlier this month, giving the much-loved rocker an historic 20th No. 1 record, including those with Cold Chisel.

The Barnes chart charge was decisive, his first seasonal song collection dislodging Taylor Swift who held strong at the top for five weeks with Midnights. Barnes is ahead of The Beatles, Madonna, U2 and Swift for the most No. 1 albums crown.

He leads this year’s arrival of the Christmas kings and queens on the pop charts, with enduring fan favourites from Mariah Carey, Michael Buble, the Bocelli family and WHAM! lobbing into this week’s top 50 singles and albums lists.

Barnes looked pretty happy about the result – leaning on a cane as he posed with the No. 1 award near the Christmas tree at the family’s home – which confirms him as the artist with the most ARIA No. 1 records of all time.

Blue Christmas also topped the vinyl chart.

“It’s been a rough week given that I’ve withdrawn from summer touring to have surgery. I’d like to say that the warm reception for this album has put a spring in my step but that would be a medical miracle right now,” he joked.

“Instead, I’ll just say thanks to everyone who keeps listening to my new music and thank all the people behind the scenes for their help. I wish everyone the happiest of holidays and can’t wait to get back on stage next year.”

The record-breaking No.1 will be particularly poignant for the Gudinski family, who have always been close to the Barnes clan.

Mushroom Group CEO Matt Gudinski has continued his father Michael’s legacy of always backing each Barnes project to the hilt, even when their artist wasn’t able to undertake the typical and often gruelling promotion trail because of his crook back.

“Twenty number one albums. It’s quite mind-blowing when you stop and think about it,” Matt said.

“And he continues to set records; following the success of the Soul Deep 30 album, this is the first time that Jimmy has had two solo albums debut at No.1 in the same year. Jimmy has such a special relationship with Australian music fans – one that he never takes for granted.”
