Green Day promise to bring their epic Saviors world tour to Australia

Green Day rockers will mark the 30th anniversary of their breakthrough record Dookie with a tour but the album will be 31 before Aussie fans get to see them.

Green Day may be saving their best fans for last with the American rockers flagging their Saviors world tour will land in Australia in 2025.

As Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool prepare to release their 14th studio album next month, they confirmed the band will return for what is expected to be a stadium tour in early 2025.

“It’s been way too long since we’ve been in Australia and we’re making plans right now. Hopefully we’re getting out there in 2025,” Armstrong said.

As Foo Fighters have proven on their current victory lap of the country, playing to their biggest ever audience of 75,000 people at Accor Stadium on Saturday, stadium rock remains hugely popular in Australia.

Green Day have been favourites on the Australian tour circuit since 1996 and last played in arenas on their Revolution Radio tour in 2017.

Bassist Dirnt said “Australia has always been a big stop for us.”

“I feel like you guys really understand rock ‘n’ roll, and it’s great to be around people that … celebrates rock and roll and has so many great heroes to its name,” he said.

The band said their new record Saviors possesses the same spirit of their major label debut Dookie, which swept the world during the altrock revolution of the mid 90s and generated anthems including Basket Case, Welcome to Paradise and Longview.

They released new single Dilemma last week which was inspired by Armstrong’s struggles with addiction.

“I was sober now I’m drunk again / I’m in trouble and in love again / I don’t want to be a dead man walking / I don’t want to be a dead man walking,” he sings.

The frontman said it was one of the easiest of the new songs for him to write because it was so personal.

“I’ve struggled with addiction ever since I was a teenager, and I got sober for like five years … I started drinking again and it really started taking a physical and mental toll on me where I just felt like I couldn’t stop, I was a glutton, it became an obsession,” Armstrong said.

“It started affecting the people around me that I love the most. And so that’s what I wrote about. And I haven’t had a drink in like 16 months.”

Dilemma is out now and Saviors is released on January 19.
