Danielle Spencer has released her first new single in 14 years in a shock comeback to the Australian pop scene.
The reclusive alternative singer-songwriter put her recording career on hold for several years while raising her sons Charlie and Tennyson with ex-husband actor Russell Crowe.
Spencer released her debut album White Monkey in 2001 and its follow-up Calling All Magicians in 2010.
She has maintained her cultural presence over the past decade performing with her revered singer songwriter father, Play School legend Don Spencer, to support his Australian Children’s Music Foundation, and made the Dancing With The Stars grand final in 2012.
While she released a covers album with her producer Vince Pizzinga as a duo called Lost Luggage in 2020, her epic new single Regenerate is her first new single since Wish I’d Been Here in 2010.
Spencer returns to her bold operatic pop style, reminiscent of Kate Bush and Kate Miller-Heidke.
Radio queen Jackie O and television hosts Sophie Monk and Joh Griggs were among Spencer’s champions who rallied to show their support on social media when she unveiled the single over the weekend.
The pop artist said the song is a “very personal journey” for her as she reignites her dormant recording career.
“Regenerate is about finding light after darkness. It’s a very personal journey for me, but I think it’s something we all relate to – those moments where we feel broken but manage to rise again, stronger than ever,” she said.
Back in 2020, ahead of her return to television to strip naked for Seven’s cancer charity special, All New Monty: Guys & Gals, Spencer shared how she put her singing career on the backburner for raise her sons.
“It was difficult because I always felt that to keep our family together both of us couldn’t be working and there came a point where I had to prioritise the kids, where they needed to be and their schooling,” she told Stellar in 2020.
“Obviously Russell’s career was going gangbusters and I just felt like, ‘This is not my time.’
“I absolutely love being a mother and I wouldn’t change a thing, but I didn’t feel I could prioritise my career for a while there. The kids needed a parent who was present.”
Regenerate is the first taste from her third album which Spencer said will be released independently next year.
Spencer returns to the stage to perform the song as part of OzHarvest Unite to Feed Australia Live! special airing on Seven Network on December 3 from 7.30pm.
