FEW people anticipated how well the original Deadpool was going to do.
The movie was stuck in development hell for over a decade and it wasn’t until footage was accidentally leaked that Deadpool received its long-awaited green light.
Despite the difficulty leading up to its release, Deadpool would go on to be one of the biggest success stories of 2016 and is still the highest-grossing R-Rated film of all time.
Its popularity obviously meant the near-inevitability of a sequel which meant the movie’s screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick knuckled down and got to work.
Fans of the first Deadpool have been eagerly awaiting some form of an update and thankfully, the writers did a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter to spill secrets on the sequel.
When asked how close the writers were to starting filming they said, “We’re very close to a draft that we’ll go off and shoot in a couple of months and we couldn’t be more thrilled.”
The writing duo have also written hit movies like Zombieland and G.I. Joe: Retaliation with their most recent creation Life in cinemas now.
Despite a stream of box office successes under their belt, Reese and Wernick realise the stakes for Deadpool 2 are higher than ever, which means they’re definitely not going to be rushed.
“We don’t want to put the cart before the horse, and often times with release dates that happens. You end up racing and you end up being forced to do something you’re not happy with.”
And, while Reese and Wernick understand the pressure behind writing perhaps one of the world’s most anticipated sequels, they’re still pretty confident.
“People are going to have to duck us. Fox is probably going to be able to drop [Deadpool 2] on a date and everyone else is going to scatter, because no one will want to come out the same weekend.”
Fans of Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds would also probably know that the two actors, who met on X-Men in 2009, are actually really great friends.
And, that friendship has evolved into Reynolds begging his friend, and the world, for a Deadpool and Wolverine collaboration.
“I want Deadpool and Wolverine in a movie together,” Reynolds said to EW.
“What we’re gonna have to do is convince Hugh. If anything, I’m going to need to do what I can to get my internet friends back on board to help rally another cause down the line.”
The Hollywood Reporter decided to bring up the sought-after collab with the publication’s reporter suggesting Deadpool meet the real Hugh Jackman in the movie, rather than as Wolverine.
“That’s not a bad idea. I like that,” Reese said.
“Deadpool lives in a world where Hugh Jackman is out there. He’s got the People’s Sexiest Man Alive cover that he staples to his forehead in the first movie, so maybe he could meet Hugh as Hugh. That would be really funny.”
Whether or not the two actors will actually appear together in a movie remains to be seen but at least Deadpool’s writers are still sticking to their 2018 release date.
