JASON Segel has revealed how he gained almost 20 kilos for his latest film role, describing his weight transformation as “horrible”.

The How I Met Your Mother actor relied on a junk food diet consisting mostly of Hot Pockets to pack on the pounds for The End of the Tour, in which he plays late novelist David Foster Wallace.

“The first week is fun, and after that, every day feels like Thanksgiving night,” the 35-year-old told US talk show co-hosts Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan. “Like, you’re just done. You have no energy or anything like that.”

In the lead up to filming, Segel said he was forced to resort to a “Hot Pocket diet” to gain “about 30, 40 pounds” over a short period.

“By the end, I was running out of time. I had about two weeks left so I put myself on a Hot Pocket diet, which was two Hot Pockets every three hours,” he said.

“It was horrible. I was eating like 12 Hot Pockets a day at that point. I was so sick of them and I swore I would never eat another Hot Pocket.”

Segel stars alongside Jesse Eisenberg (who plays writer and journalist David Lipsky) in the upcoming biopic, which hits Australian cinemas December 3.
