Drew Barrymore and Ariana Grande have been teased on social media over a “cringe” interview moment that saw the emotional stars both fighting back tears.
Grande has become infamous for breaking down in tears during the Wicked press tour, so when she was announced for an appearance on Drew Barrymore’s show the world waited with bated breath to see just how long it would take for the dramatics to begin.
As expected, viewers didn’t need to wait long, with the tears pouring as soon as Barrymore presented Grande with the original Glinda wand from The Wizard of Oz movie.
“I have something that’s extremely exciting and special. It was owned by the Smithsonian,” Barrymore, 49, shares with her eager guest in a preview of the interview, which prompts Grande’s eyes to bulge as she demands to know, “What are you talking about?”
The host goes on, “And now it’s owned in private hands, but for the purposes of our sit-down, they loaned it to us.”
After Grande, 31, lets out a gasp, Barrymore looks around at her crew and asks, “Um, bring out the original Glinda wand, please?”
Immediately, the pop star’s hand goes up to cover her mouth as she stares intently in the direction from where the wand-yielding employee is coming.
“Are you serious right now?” she asks Barrymore, who smiles as she nods while holding her clasped hands up to her chin.
Grande — who is wearing a pink strapless corset-style A-line dress — then stands up and pretends to walk off the set, saying, “Thank you, guys! It’s been fun! Bye!”
“Like, how did you even pull this off? Oh my God, did you break in?” Grande asks Barrymore, who explains, “I have to give credit to everyone on this show because, literally, we were so excited about you coming here. We were like, ‘OK, let’s get the wand!’”
Fans rushed to social media to poke fun at the moment, with one commenting: “I just knew the Drew Barrymore interview would be full of crying!”
A second wrote: “There is no such thing as personal space. Y’all are merging into one by the end of the interview.”
“Is it just me who is still cringing over how Drew is too close to her guests? I couldn’t get over it sorry,” remarked another, while a fourth added: “Why does this girl come off as so phoney about everything. It’s obnoxious I can’t handle it!”
However, some enjoyed the pair’s chemistry during the sit-down chat, saying: “I know getting to sit with these two for an hour would heal my inner child”.
