A first-ever Bluey animated feature film is in the works under the Disney banner.
On Wednesday morning, The Walt Disney Company and BBC Studios announced that the beloved Australian children’s cartoon will hit the big screen globally in 2027, followed by streaming on Disney+.
After its theatrical release, the movie, written and directed by Bluey creator Joe Brumm, will also air locally on ABC iview and ABC Kids.
The animated film will charm viewers with the same wit and humour that made the show a phenomenon worldwide. It will continue follow the adventures of the loveable and curious blue heeler dog and his mum, dad and little sister pup, Bingo.
“I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on ‘The Sign’ in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that,” creator Brumm said. “I’ve always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together.”
“I’m excited to continue to partner with Cecilia Persson, Tom Fussell and the team at BBC Studios, and Dana Walden, Alan Bergman and Disney to bring this new ’Bluey’ story to the big screen.”
The popular Aussie children’s cartoon has become one of the biggest animated shows of all time since its debut in 2018. It has since taken the world by storm, streaming in more than 140 countries.
This year, Bluey was 2024’s most-watched series globally on Disney+, and was the number-one most-watched series on streaming to date through November in the US alone – it clocked up more than 50.5 billion minutes watched, which equates to a whopping 842 million hours.
In Australia, the series was nominated for Most Outstanding Children’s Program for three consecutive years at the TV Week Logie Awards before taking out the Best Children’s Show award this year.
It also won Best Children’s Program at the AACTA Awards in 2022 and 2024.
“Since its debut on Disney Jr. and Disney+, Bluey has become a global phenomenon, uniting families everywhere with its heartfelt stories of play, imagination and connection,” said Alan Bergman and Dana Walden, the co-chairmen of Disney Entertainment.
“We are so proud to expand upon our relationship with BBC Studios to bring the magic of Bluey to the big screen – for real life! – and we are deeply grateful to Joe Brumm for creating a world that continues to inspire and delight families everywhere.”
