Frills, flounce and florals – Zimmermann has ruled the runway at New York Fashion Week.

The Australian label showcased its latest collection in the Big Apple today, with a star-studded front row that included Katie Holmes, Victoria Lee and Bambi Northwood-Blyth, along with Vogue Australia’s Christine Centenera.

Victoria’s Secret models Devon Windsor and Nina Agdal were also there, wearing the brand’s new season range.

The Sydney-based designer’s autumn/winter ’20 collection – dubbed “Ladybeetle” – was well-received by critics, including Women’s Wear Daily which called it“wonderfully feminine”.

“Nicky Zimmermann ignited her happy-go-lucky, without a doubt feminine fall (autumn) line-up with a playful spirit of lucky charms,” the influential publication said, of Zimmermann’s latest collection.

The range featured sequins (said to be a first for the celebrity-favourite brand), as well as velvet, flares, ruffles, floral-printed pants, and Zimmermann’s signature oversized dresses.

For an autumn/winter collection, the pieces also showed some skin, with mini skirts and sheer shirts among the key looks.

Holmes opted for wide-legged denim, teamed with a power blazer and silk blouse with a bow underneath.

DION LEE’S NEW YORK INSPO

Also on the NYFW schedule today was New York-based Sydney designer Dion Lee, who staged his runway, in part, on actual moving escalators.

Lee relocated from Bondi to Manhattan about four years ago, describing the city as inspiring his designs.

“I think living and working in the city (New York) you’re exposed to so much artistically … and all of those things influence how I put a collection together,” Lee told News Corp Australia.

“My apartment is two blocks from my office in Tribeca.

“I generally work from about 8am until at least midnight, that’s kind of generally the hours we’re keeping in the studio.

“We’re doing fittings everyday, it is an atelier in many ways, from the sketch to construction stages.”

Lee’s label has had huge success in the American market, which is No. 2 behind Australia in terms of global online sales.

His designs – such as a white corset worn by supermodel Bella Hadid last season – often go viral on Instagram, driving sales from his online store, including in the US market which is No. 2 (behind Australia) for online purchases.

“(Physical stores) need to be really unique in order for it to differentiate itself from the online platform,” Lee said, of the changing nature of fashion retail.

“It has been more about being authentic to myself and doing what feels right for me as a brand – that’s really where we’ve had success.

“The US is our second largest market to Australia in terms of our e-commerce platform.

“We all lives our lives online … it does make sense that that platform will evolve and become more tailored to design and communicating fashion.”
