JIMMY Barnes is recuperating in hospital after emergency back surgery just hours after finding out he had secured his 10th No. 1 album.

Barnes had a back procedure last week but suffered complications on Saturday morning and was rushed to hospital.

The indefatigable rocker has been busy promoting his new record 30:30 Hindsight which reinvents his hits with his family and friends to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his solo career.

But doctors have now ordered him to stay in bed for at least a week after he is released from hospital.

Barnes remained upbeat about missing his No. 1 celebrations and spending Father’s Day with his beloved family.

He has also had to cancel his promoted appearance on the ABC’s Q and A on Monday.

“I am very lucky to have a great surgeon and as much as I don’t want to have to respect their advice to remain in bed, I will but I can’t wait to be up and about as soon as possible,” he said.

His record label boss and mate Michael Gudinski joked that the rocker had got “over excited about his No.1.”

“I think he was more excited about this one than he was for the first one he got,” he said.

Barnes will celebrate Father’s Day with another No. 1 record as his 30:30 Hindsight album debuts at the top of the ARIA charts today.

The much-loved rocker confirms his position as one of the country’s most successful recording artists with his 10th No. 1 solo record.

Add to that tally the four top spots he shared with Cold Chisel and he is closing in on The Beatles record of 15 albums to hit No. 1 on the Australian charts.

The album to celebrate 30 years as a solo artist paired Barnes with members of his family, including daughter Mahalia and sons Jackie and David Campbell to reimagine some of his classic hits.

Keith Urban helped Barnes reinvent Good Times, the Easybeats song he made a hit with INXS in the 1980s but hadn’t been able to face performing after the death of his mate Michael Hutchence.

Other artists who perform with the Working Class Man on the record include The Living End, Tina Arena, Bernard Fanning, Steve Van Zandt and Diesel.

In less than a week, the record was certified gold with more than 35,000 copies hitting the market.

While his celebrations will be low-key after back surgery last week, Barnes plans to reward his legion of loyal fans with an extensive national tour which will include winery shows, theatre concerts and the Rolling Stones gig at Adelaide Oval.

“We want to celebrate the #1 and the best way we know how to do that is to play live and to thank our fans right across Australia,” Barnes said.

“We’re going to have a great time. And having the new album being received so well is going to make an already special tour even more special.”

The man who backed his solo career from day one, Mushroom boss Michael Gudinski, may have been more excited than his mate about the significant achievement of 30:30 Hindsight.

“With thirty years as a solo artist (and ten years in one of Australia’s most legendary bands) Jimmy Barnes continues to set the benchmark for musicians in Australia,” Gudinski said.

“He never ceases to amaze us all at Mushroom with his creativity, work ethic and dedication across all aspects of making, performing and promoting his music. But above all, he is singing better than ever and in career-best shape.”
