IT was an offer more than 100 Australian and international musicians could not refuse.
Triple J has spent almost a year enlisting the acting talents of stars from Daniel Johns to Ice Cube for the short film trailer to launch its annual Hottest 100 music poll.
The hilarious “action movie” features car chases, explosions and, of course, lasers, as breakfast hosts Matt Okine and Alex Dyson seek to solve the mystery of why some of our biggest chart performers are being kidnapped.
The roll call of guest stars features 103 solo artists and members of bands who have released significant singles and albums this year.
Last year’s winner Vance Joy was the first artist to be filmed for the five-minute short with English DJ and producer Duke Dumont the final “actor” to offer his services just a few weeks ago.
Among the international artists who make a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo are British folk rockers Mumford and Sons, American DJ and producer superstar Diplo, Swedish rockers The Hives and New York art rock band TV On The Radio.
Uptown Funk supremo Mark Ronson makes the most of his cameo as a save-the-day mystery man while his mate Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker is almost split in two by lasers.

The Australian credits read like a who’s who of award-winning and popular musicians from our global hitmakers Vance Joy, Courtney Barnett and Flume to newcomers Alison Wonderland, Jarryd James and Meg Mac.
The Preatures’ singer Izzi Manfredi shows off her martial arts chops, while the notoriously shy guy Matt Corby gets a speaking part, telling fans he is afraid of nothing.
The irrepressible Peking Duk look rather fetching in their police uniforms and get a few scenes in the short.
Barnett also gets considerable airtime racing a muscle car.
Voting for the Hottest 100, which is believed to be one of the world’s biggest polls with hundreds of thousands of votes cast, opened on Thursday, with the countdown held on Australia Day.
The station has warned they will block any attempt to repeat the ##Tay4Hottest100 campaign which tried to get Taylor Swift’s Shake It off onto the countdown.
“Don’t troll the poll. Votes made as part of a competition that promotes a song or artist, or a campaign that undermines the Hottest 100 may be disqualified or ignored,” they posted on the Hottest 100 website.
“We want genuine votes, from genuine listeners. If we feel something’s preventing that from happening, we’ll look into it for you and take appropriate action.”
The irony is Swift’s songs covered by Ryan Adams this year for his rockification of her 1989 album could make a showing.
Among the songs pundits have predicted will make the cut include Major Lazer’s Lean On, The Weeknd’s Can’t Feel My Face, Jarryd James’ Do You Remember? and Tame Impala’s Let It Happen.
