‘I wanted you to hear it from me’: Hugh Jackman reveals new cancer scare

The Hollywood heavyweight has urged fans to learn from his mistakes as he waits on news from his latest cancer scare.

Aussie actor Hugh Jackman has had another skin cancer scare.

The Australian Hollywood heavyweight, 54, underwent biopsies after his doctor noticed “two little things” that could potentially be basal cell carcinoma – the most common, and least dangerous, form of skin cancer.

Wearing a plaster bandage over his nose, Jackman shared the news in a video on his social media, and urged his many followers to practise sun safety.

“Hey guys. So, I wanted you to hear it from me just in case someone sees me on the street or whatever,” he says.

“I’ve just had two biopsies done. I just went to my doctor – she’s awesome – and she saw two little things which could be basal cell carcinoma or not. She’ll let me know in two or three days and as soon as I know, I’ll let you know.

“Just to remind you, Basal Cells in the world of skin cancers is the least dangerous of them all.”

He went on to urge fans, especially ahead of the northern hemisphere summer, to be safe when out in the sun.

“Please wear sunscreen. It is just not worth it,” he said.

“No matter how much you want to tan, trust me, trust me, trust me.

“This is all stuff that happened 25 years ago it’s all coming out now.”

The Greatest Showman star then added: “Put some sunscreen on. You’ll still have an incredible time out there, all right? Please be safe.”

In his caption, Jackman reiterated his safety message, adding:

“I know you’ve heard me talk about my basal cell carcinoma before,” he wrote, explaining he’s been so open in the past about his skin cancer scares to remind people to wear sunscreen.

“I know you’ve heard me talk about my basal cell carcinomas before. I’m going to keep talking about them, if need be,” he wrote.

“And if it reminds even one person to put on sunscreen with a high SPF, then I’m happy.”

In 2017, the Wolverine star had six skin cancers removed from his face within a two-year period.

When filming the Greatest Showman, Jackman revealed he was advised not to sing, after having skin cancer removed from his nose as the movement could affect the 80 stitches in his nose.

“I explained that I should stand just to be clear with everyone that I will be singing on the day and to gesticulate and of course act all the scenes.”

Jackman managed to stick to this plan, but for one song, belting out the song From Now On at the top of his voice. He had to get his stitches resewn.

In 2021, he also had an inconclusive result following a biopsy on his face, revealing the worst it could be was BCC.

Jackman has spoken often about how his childhood was spent outdoors and that skin protection was not a priority in his family.

“I don’t think my dad or mum ever bought it or made us put it on,” he said.

“The thing I remember most, the rule about being outdoors was you weren’t allowed to swim within half an hour of eating … and it’s not true.”
