Founding members of Grammy-winning hip hop pioneers Naughty By Nature, Vin Rock and DJ Kay Gee, have touched down in Darwin ahead of a highly anticipated show at Discovery nightclub on Sunday night.

The godfathers of hip hop, whose origins date back to the mid-1980s, will perform alongside local talent in a celebration of 50 years since the birth of the genre in New York City in 1973.

Speaking ahead of the gig on Sunday, Vin Rock said it was the group’s first time in Darwin, with regional stops always a highlight of any tour.

“We’ve been to Alice Springs before but every time we come we want to explore new territory,” he said.

“Usually when we go to the main areas, Perth and Sydney and Brisbane, it’s nothing like coming to the true areas.”

The group, whose single Holiday went platinum in Australia in 1999, will take the stage alongside Darwin’s own Yung Milla, Yello and Lil Kootsie as well as Brisbane’s Big noyz.

“They have a hip hop scene out here, their music scene, and the brother here (Big noyz), he’s performing,” Vin Rock said.

“He said his music is a little different so it’ll be good to check out their culture, their type of music, style of music and hey, you never know, we may end up collaborating with these guys.”

Vin Rock said along with the hits and classics, tonight’s concertgoers would be treated to some brand new tracks from his side project with DJ Kay Gee.

“We are Naughty By Nature but we do have a new project called Illtown Sluggaz, so Kay Gee and I head that project up,” he said.

“We’ll be pushing out new music, we’ll be touring a lot, so we’ll be making the rounds in Australia, introducing our new project to the people.”
