Princess Eugenie has paid tribute to her “Grannie” the Queen on the eve of the monarch’s historic Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Writing in The Spectator magazine, Princess Eugenie said she hoped her one-year-old son August would grow up to have the Queen’s “patience, her calmness and her kindness while always being able to laugh at himself and keep a twinkle in his eye”.

She described her grandmother as having been “a constant rock for so many”.

Princess Eugenie, who is married to businessman Jack Brooksbank, reflected on her “own special little family” with the arrival of August, who was born in February last year.

“I think of my grannie and what she has stood for, for so many people and for our family during these 70 years,” she wrote.

“I’d love Augie to have her patience, her calmness and her kindness, while always being able to laugh at himself and keep a twinkle in his eye.”

In the piece, which was called “My pride in Grannie”, the daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson said: “Seventy years is really quite something, isn’t it?”

“The Jubilee stands as a testimony to a woman who has transcended time and has been that constant rock for so many when the world can feel so fragile.”

The Queen is the first British monarch in history to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee.

It comes as Britons prepared on Wednesday local time to mark a record-breaking 70 years on the throne for the Queen with four days of festivities offering temporary respite from doubts over the monarchy’s future.

In Britain and the wider Commonwealth, support for the monarchy overall is an open question once the increasingly frail, 96-year-old monarch departs the scene.

With Prince Charles taking over more of his mother’s duties for occasions of state, there is a sense that the first — and possibly the last — Platinum Jubilee in British history marks a turning of the page.

The Queen has overcome numerous family traumas, including Prince Charles’ very public split from Princess Diana and personal heartache when her husband Prince Philip died aged 99 last year after more than 70 years together.

The Jubilee is being seen as a chance for the nation to give thanks to the Queen publicly, after social distancing last year prevented crowds at Prince Philip’s funeral.

The celebrations kick off Thursday with Trooping the Colour, a military parade that has officially marked the British monarch’s birthday for centuries.

A fly-past will include Spitfires, the iconic fighter plane that helped win the Battle of Britain and fend off Nazi Germany in 1940.

The aerial display is expected to be watched by the Queen and senior royals from the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

Balcony numbers have been limited to “working royals” only, leaving no place for self-exiled grandson Prince Harry and his wife Meghan — returning on a rare visit to Britain — nor the Queen’s disgraced second son Prince Andrew.
