Tom Cruise finally addresses big rumour

Plenty of wild rumours have plagued the Top Gun star throughout his career – and he’s finally weighed in on one of the “weirdest.”

Since his film debut in the 1981 Endless Love, Tom Cruise has remained one of the biggest names in Hollywood.

Whether he is the answer to the question, “who is your celebrity crush?,” or is the root of a strange Scientology headline, his name holds a lot of weight – one that leads to the “weirdest” of rumours being spread, according to Cruise himself.

UK outlet The Times has published a story about a chat between Christopher McQuarrie and Simon Pegg, both of whom have worked on the Mission: Impossible franchise with Cruise. The two discussed the time McQuarrie asked Cruise to disclose the “weirdest” story he has heard about himself in Hollywood. Cruise shared that he is baffled by the rumour that others “were not allowed to look [him] in the eye.”

Pegg, who has played Benji Dunn in four of the action films leading up to the upcoming two-part Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, revealed that he has “been able to hack [his] way through all the bizarre mythology that surrounds [Cruise].”

“On one side he’s Tom Cruise – this enigmatic film star everyone wants to know about,” he continued. “And on the other, he’s just a guy. I like being normal with him.”

Despite what Pegg says, Cruise is known to have a rather … intense persona, which was only supported by a viral video of him going off on crew members for breaking COVID-19 protocol while filming Dead Reckoning in 2020.

While this video portrayed Cruise as unable to keep his cool, Pegg said it also demonstrated Cruise’s dedication to maintaining a safe environment for him and his fellow cast and crew.

“Everything that Tom cares about, in terms of his job, was at stake due to the pandemic,” he explained. “For him, there was a danger this virus could wipe cinema off the face of this earth.”

Cruise certainly cares about the industry and has recently expressed his support in less brash ways, enthusiastically sharing his plans to see both Oppenheimer and Barbie (in that order) during their box-office-busting opening weekend.

As for Cruise’s work, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is ‘cruising’ into Australian theatres on Thursday, July 13.
