Sarah Ferguson has confirmed she was not invited to King Charles’ coronation, despite feeling “close” to the royal family.

The Duchess of York, who separated from Prince Andrew in 1992, has re-entered the royal fold in recent months, having spent Christmas at Sandringham for the first time in three decades last year. The 63-year-old was also present at the late Queen’s funeral in September.

So it came as a surprise to royal watchers when it was revealed earlier this week that Ferguson wasn’t invited to Charles’ coronation at Westminster Abbey on May 6, with 2000 people making the guest list.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, she revealed why she wasn’t invited to the historic occasion.

“It’s a state occasion, and being divorced, I don’t think you can have it both ways,” she said.

“And so, I am divorced. And I’m really loving being divorced to my ex-husband, not from my ex-husband, it’s [important] to differentiate.”

Despite that, Ferguson said she would celebrate in “private”, as she heaped praise on King Charles and Queen Camilla for their work to “unify” the family.

“The great thing about this moment in time is the unity of family. I think Charles and Camilla are doing an exceptional job at unifying the family,” she said.

“Just because I’m not there on the state occasion, in private I can be there, and that’s a lovely feeling to be part of the family.

“You can’t have it both ways. You mustn’t sit on the fence. You’re either in or out.”

Ferguson and Prince Andrew, 63, officially divorced in 1996. They share two daughters, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice.

Elsewhere in the interview, Ferguson had nothing but love for her ex-husband, calling him a “kind, good man” following his ousting from the senior workings of the royal family amid his settlement of a sexual abuse civil lawsuit in February last year.

“With Prince Andrew, he’s such a good man. He’s a kind, good man. And I think the spotlight needs to come off him to let him get on with his life and rebuild,” she said.

Andrew will be attending the coronation in a private capacity as the King’s brother, but will have no official role in the ceremony.

Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice will also be in attendance.

Harry to go solo to coronation ceremony

It comes after Buckingham Palace announced last week that Meghan Markle had declined her invitation, and instead will stay in California with her two children, Prince Archie, 3, and Princess Lilibet, 1. The day of the coronation is Archie’s fourth birthday.

But in news that is said to have “delighted” Charles, Prince Harry will fly to London for the occasion, despite frosty relations with his family.

Much like Andrew, given the Duke of Sussex is no longer a working royal, he will only attend to observe formalities, with Prince William and his son, nine-year-old Prince George, set to be the only royals to play an official part.

Harry will also be absent from the Buckingham Palace balcony, where King Charles, Queen Camilla, the Prince and Princess of Wales and their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will cap off formalities by waving to the public.

It’s set to be a quick trip for the Duke, who reportedly is flying out after the official ceremony and skipping the coronation concert at Windsor Castle on May 7.

The coronation will mark Harry’s first time being seen publicly in the presence of his family since he released his explosive tell-all memoir, Spare, in January.
