Sarah Ferguson thanked supporters for an outpouring of kindness after she revealed a shock breast cancer diagnosis.
In an emotional Instagram post, the Duchess of York acknowledged the well wishes she’s received since revealing her single mastectomy on her podcast, Tea Talks with the Duchess.
“Thank you so much for such kindness and support,” she said, with a prayer emoji against the backdrop of flowers.
AUSSIE SISTER URGED CHECK-UP
Sarah Ferguson has told how she had a “single mastectomy” after a routine check-up led to a shock breast cancer diagnosis.
The ex-wife of Prince Andrew urged women to go to their cancer screenings after her breast cancer was detected in a routine mammogram.
Speaking on her podcast Tea Talks with the Duchess and Sarah, the Duchess of York revealed she had no symptoms before going to get checked.
And she said she almost missed her check-up, adding that it was her Australian-based sister Jane who convinced her to get screened.
The podcast aired on Monday but was recorded earlier this month, the day before the Duchess went into hospital for her surgery.
She told co-host Jane Thomson: “We’re actually taping the podcast today because tomorrow I’m going in for a mastectomy, a single mastectomy. It’s very important I speak about it.
“I don’t mind if no-one wants to hear from me. I am telling people. I want every single person listening to go get checked.
“My sister from Australia said ‘Sarah - get on with it’.“It’s easy to put it off, to say ‘I’ll do it next week’. She said ‘I need you to go’.”
After the screening, Fergie was diagnosed with breast cancer and brought into hospital for a single mastectomy.
Before the podcast aired, a spokesman announced that Fergie had undergone surgery for breast cancer.
“Sarah, Duchess of York was recently diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer detected at a routine mammogram screening,” a spokesman for Ferguson said.
“She was advised she needed to undergo surgery which has taken place successfully.”
“The Duchess is receiving the best medical care and her doctors have told her that the prognosis is good. She is now recuperating with her family.”
“The Duchess wants to express her immense gratitude to all the medical staff who have supported her in recent days,” the royal’s spokesman said.
“She is also hugely thankful to the staff involved in the mammogram which identified her illness, which was otherwise symptom free, and believes her experience underlines the importance of regular screening.’”
The 63-year-old, who has two daughters, is now back home at Windsor after being discharged from the King Edward VII Hospital in Marylebone, a private facility which has treated members of the royal family for decades.
Fergie's describes her new weekly podcast as a series “about the highs and lows of everyday life”.
She said she would be “taking on some of the biggest and strangest stories from around the world”.
During the first episode, released last month, Ferguson described herself as “very shy” and said she “trusts too much” and “too many people”.
Asked if she had a romantic partner the Duchess said “no”, but added that she would like one.
