Queen Mary of Denmark cut a regal and elegant figure in purple as she continued her solo streak of royal engagements on Saturday.

Queen Mary of Denmark continued her streak of solo royal engagements on Saturday cutting a regal and elegant figure in a purple blouse, sleek black skirt and black pumps.

The queen was given a matching posy of flowers as she arrived in Aalborg University, where she had travelled to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Earlier in the day, Mary donned a floral scarf, also in various shades of purple, and a navy blazer to visit a psychiatric facility in Vesthimmerland, northern Denmark.

On her first visit to the facility, known as Bostedet Aars, the mother-of-four could be seen chatting to residents as she casually strolled around the grounds.

The Australian-born queen was seen warmly embracing one resident who was overjoyed to meet her and she thrilled a group of schoolchildren who lined up to meet her wearing “crowns”.

The solo trip without King Frederik comes after the family gathered publicly for a photo opportunity earlier this week.

The royal couple joined Queen Margrethe in Fredensborg, Denmark, ahead of her 84th birthday celebrations, their first public appearance together in weeks.

Queen Margrethe’s sister Princess Benedikte and Margrethe’s pet Dachsund Tilia completed the group picture taken outside the door of the royal residence.

Mary, Frederik and Benedikte wore matching shades of blue and celebrated privately at Fredensborg Castle, where royal weddings, anniversaries and birthdays are traditionally held.

It comes after Mary, 52, and Frederik, 55, appeared to be tense with each other on a family skiing trip to Verbier, Switzerland over the Easter break.
