Princess Beatrice has given birth to her second daughter with husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.

The royal couple’s daughter Athena was born several weeks prematurely and is said to be healthy and doing well – weighing in at just over 2kg.

The 36-year-old royal and Mapelli Mozzi already have a three-year-old daughter, Sienna.

Mapelli Mozzi also has son Christopher Woolf, known as Wolfie, eight, from a previous relationship.

Announcing the birth, a post on the Royal Family’s social media said: “Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice and Mr Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter, Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi, born on Wednesday, January 22, at 12:57pm.

“The baby was born weighing 4 pounds and 5 ounces (2kg).

“The King and Queen, and other members of The Royal Family have all been informed and are delighted with the news.

“Princess Beatrice and Mr Mapelli Mozzi would like to thank all the staff at the hospital for their wonderful care.

“Her Royal Highness and her daughter are healthy and doing well, and the family are enjoying spending time together with Athena’s older siblings, Wolfie and Sienna.”

The official photo issued of the new baby Athena, taken by her father, shows her wrapped in a blanket, with her hand covering her face, presumably because of concerns about privacy.

In a social media post, her Mapelli Mozzi said: “She is tiny and absolutely perfect” and the family was “completely besotted with her”.

Athena, is the grandchild of Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, and Sarah, the Duchess of York.

She becomes 11th in line to the throne with Beatrice’s younger sister Princess Eugenie moving down to 12th place.
The baby girl would have been the late Queen’s 13th great-grandchild – but will not be a HRH.

“She is already so adored and I’m incredibly blessed to be a granny once again. So proud of Edo, Beatrice and the rest of my little 5-a-side team,” the Duchess of York posted on social media.

The statement from Buckingham Palace gave the baby’s full name as Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi, born last Wednesday at 12.57pm local time.

Her daughter’s name is a huge nod to the late Queen, Elizabeth II.

It comes after the couple announced Princess Beatrice was pregnant in October last year.

At the time, Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice and Mr Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are very pleased to announce that they are expecting their second child together in early spring; a sibling for Wolfie, aged eight, and Sienna, aged three.”

They also shared a photo of Mapelli Mozzi with his two kids walking through the countryside.

The Duchess of York took to her Instagram to celebrate the announcement in October.

“A very proud GiGi/Mum today. Such an incredible blessing and an embrace to my heart,” she wrote.

“Wolfie, August, Ernie and Sienna will be over the moon to have the fifth member of the five aside!”

Beatrice’s younger sister Princess Eugenie also congratulated “Beabea”.

She shared a group photo from Christmas 2022 on social media and wrote: “Congratulations Beabea. So looking forward to more on this journey of motherhood together.

“And adding another little one to the gang. I couldn’t find a single group shot of us, so this one from Christmas 2022 will have to do.”

The good news comes after the Royal Family endured a difficult year with the King, the Princess of Wales and Princess Beatrice’s mother Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, all being diagnosed with cancer.

The duchess was treated for malignant melanoma skin cancer in January just months after undergoing a mastectomy for breast cancer.

But Princess Beatrice said in May the duchess had been given the “all clear”.

Princess Beatrice wed multi-millionaire property developer Mapelli Mozzi in 2020.

The couple met in September 2018 about a month before Princess Eugenie married businessman Jack Brooksbank, announcing their engagement a year later.

It comes after Princess Beatrice joined the royals for the annual Christmas Day lunch at Sandringham in a “change of plans”.

She and Mapelli Mozzi were planning on spending Christmas in Italy with his family.

But it is understood she received medical advice which suggested she was not to travel long distances.

Earlier in December, pregnant Beatrice was seen beaming as she arrived with her husband at Princess Catherine’s Christmas carol concert.

The couple stepped out at the star-studded Christmas celebrations at Westminster Abbey on December 6.
