King Charles III led tributes to His Majesty King Frederik X and Her Majesty Queen Mary as the world celebrated Europe’s newest Monarch.

The British royal was among the first to send his congratulations newly-crowned King and Queen, adding his wife Queen Camilla joined him in sending their best wishes.

“I look forward to working with you on ensuring that the enduring bond between our countries, and our families, remains strong, and to working together with you on issues which matter so much for our countries and the wider world,” King Charles said.

King Charles also paid tribute to the decades of service of Queen Margrethe II, adding his fond memories at the frequent visits shared between the United Kingdom and Demark.

“I was delighted that Your Majesties were able to attend our Coronation last year and I much look forward to future opportunities to celebrate the close connection that unites our countries and our families,” he said.

Norway’s King Harold V joined European royalty sending his “warmest congratulations”, saying they would carry on the legacy of Queen Margrethe and bring Denmark into a “new era”.

“With warmth, wisdom and dedication, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe has followed her country and her people through joys and sorrows. For more than 5o years she has been able to be a present monarch – with an infectious mood and vast knowledge. And with good support from his immediate family. The close friendship between our two families means a lot to all of us,” King Harold said.

“I am convinced that you will fulfil your new roles excellently. My family and I hope and pray that you will have the strength and support you need in all your endeavours.”

Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf thanked Queen Margrethe, whom he referred to as “cousin Daisy”, for their “good co-operation” over the years.

“You now enter a changed role, but the friendship between us remains — heartfelt and constant,” he said.

No foreign dignitaries or royals were invited to Sunday’s succession, in line with Danish tradition, and there was no coronation or throne for the new monarch.
