Did the Prime Minister regift Prince William some lamingtons?

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese might have just committed an etiquette faux pas by regifting Prince William a box of lamingtons he had just been given by a business just an hour earlier, The Daily Telegraph reports.

The King’s coronation

The suspect handover occurred at Kensington Palace, where the PM extended an open invitation to the royal family to visit Australia.

As he handed over the box of lamingtons to the Prince of Wales, many were left wondering whether the PM had forgotten to buy a proper gift or just didn’t have enough time to come up with something better.

During a tour of London-based Aussie bakery Bondi Green to celebrate a new Free Trade Agreement, Mr Albanese was gifted with the iconic Australian cakes.

The bakery’s website states: “We bake luxurious boxes of perfectly light, pillowy lamingtons with housemade jams and luscious changing flavours and fillings from scratch daily in our Paddington bakery.”

So perhaps not the worst thing to be regifted.

The PM had talked of his delight at meeting Prince William ahead of time, saying, “It’s always a pleasure to meet with the royal family, and I will be inviting him to Australia.”

In fact, as world leaders gather in London for Saturday’s coronation, Mr Albanese had already become one of the first world leaders to meet King Charles III before the momentous event.

The Prime Minister even declared that he would swear an oath of allegiance to the monarch.

“It was a pleasure to meet King Charles III again at Buckingham Palace, and an honour to represent Australia at his coronation,” Mr Albanese tweeted.

He also extended a formal invitation for the King and Queen Camilla to visit Australia at a suitable time.
