A fan has detailed her awkward encounter with pop star Sabrina Carpenter at a local coffee shop in Chicago – and the pop star has seemingly reacted to the run-in on her own social media.

The hilarious exchange began when a TikTok user was out on a coffee run days ago and found herself short on cash, and it was the “Espresso” singer – who was in town for the Chicago leg of her Short n’ Sweet Tour – who helped her pay for the beverage. Very on-brand, might we say.

“I saw a bunch of videos during the day of her being spotted around Chicago with this umbrella and security,” the fan prefaced in her TikTok video, which has clocked 18.1 million views to date.

“I really didn’t think much of it. I was working during the day (from home) ... I decided to go on a little walk and get some coffee.”

As she was paying at the counter, she realised she only had $5 cash and was short by 45 cents.

“While I’m ordering I remember that I have this $5 cash and I’m like, ‘Wow, if I use this $5 cash then the coffee is going to be free because girl math,’” she explained before reaching for her credit card to pay the balance.

“I don’t really carry change with me,” she added. “While I’m pulling my credit card out for this 45-cent charge, I hear a voice behind me say, ‘I got it.’”

She was shocked to learn that the voice belonged to Carpenter, 25, who was standing behind with her security team.

“I’m in shock, I have no idea what to say because Sabrina Carpenter just paid for my coffee. But something popped into my head and I just blurted it out,” the fan embarrassingly admitted.

“I looked Sabrina Carpenter right in the eye and I said, ‘That’s that me espresso’,” she revealed, referencing the singer’s famous lyrics from her smash-hit single Espresso.

Days after their coffee shop run-in, Carpenter seemingly posted a cheeky response to their encounter and the fan’s choice to reference of her hit song.

Using a TikTok trending clip of actress Jennifer Lawrence singing in the 2015 movie Joy, Carpenter lip-syncs: “And then I go and spoil it all by saying something stupid like ‘that’s that me espresso.’”

“It totally could just be because that is a tagline in one of her songs, but hundreds of people have been tagging me in the comments because that is what I said to her after she paid for my coffee,” the TikTok user concluded.

“Option A, Sabrina remembers me, she thinks I’m funny and she posted the video about what I said. Or option B, it has literally nothing to do with me and is just because that’s in her song. I’m gonna be delusional here and choose to stick with option A.”

On the topic of being on-brand, Carpenter visited the Blank Street coffee shop in London to work as a barista for the day and help serve espressos to fans back in June.

The event was a collaboration between Carpenter and Blank Street to coincide with the release of Espresso that same month.

“Was so beyond happy to see so many of you after so long,” she later wrote on her Instagram Stories, thanking fans for showing up. “hope you liked your espresso’s I love you!!!!”

Espresso recently won Song of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards last month after topping the charts worldwide, including here in Australia.
