British pop star Liam Payne has issued an emotional video revealing his private health ordeal.

The former One Direction singer, 29, was scheduled to perform six shows across South America from September 1, but has been forced to pull the pin on the tour after he was hospitalised last week.

Payne, who has been open about his mental health struggles in the past, said he recently came down with a kidney infection.

“This really is the last news I wanted to be telling you,” Payne began.

“Basically, I’ve been a little bit unwell recently, and I ended up in hospital with a bad kidney infection.

“We started rehearsals, and I’ve just been advised that now is really not the right time to be out on the road trying to recover from this.”

He said doctors had told him rescheduling the tour, which had stops in Peru, Colombia, Chile, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico, was the only option.

“I’ve got the best people around me at home trying to help me recover as we speak,” he continued.

“But yeah, we’re gonna have to reschedule the tour. Please look out for ways to refund your tickets.

“I’m looking forward to seeing you guys soon. Hopefully we’ll put on an even bigger, better show. Thank you, I’m sorry.”

Payne shot to fame in 2010 when he was grouped with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson on UK’s The X Factor.

The band went on to achieve immense global success, before Malik went solo in 2015, with the band going on an indefinite hiatus the following year.

It comes after Payne recently revealed he had secretly spent 100 days in a wellness clinic in the US last year, saying he had long struggled to navigate life post-One Direction.

During his time in the Louisiana centre, which specialises in helping people deal with past trauma, he was cut off from the outside world after handing in his phone.

He marks seven months sober this month.

“There is a point when you hit rock bottom and you realise you have got to do something different as whatever you are doing right now isn’t working for you,” he said in a YouTube video posted to his official channel in July.

“I was in bad shape up until that point.

“Honestly, more than anything I want to say thank you to [six-year-old son] Bear and his mum [Cheryl Cole] for giving me a little bit of freedom to go and get well. There is no point trying to be a dad when you have nothing to teach.

“I feel like I have a grip on life now. After I got back out, that process had worked for me, but there were still some little bits left that I kind of had to deal with myself.”

The turning point for Payne came in May last year after a car-crash interview with YouTuber Logan Paul.

In it, he criticised his former bandmate Malik, and challenged fellow pop star Justin Bieber to a fight, all while sipping straight whisky.

“I needed to take some time out for myself. I kind of became someone who I didn’t really recognise any more,” he added in his video message last month.

“I was so angry at what was going on around me that instead of taking a look inward I decided to take it outwards on everybody else.

“It was wrong really, and my own frustrations with my own career. I want to apologise for that.

“The rest of the boys have really stuck by me and when I needed them most they kind of came to my rescue, even Zayn.

“It was hard for me to watch back. It is one of those life-changing moments that saved my life in a way.”
