“Rest in peace Liam, you were my childhood,” one person wrote.

“I’m crying I love u,” said another.

“This can’t be real,” another added.

“Rest easy, Liam,” said another.

Payne had recently reunited with fellow member Niall Horan in Argentina earlier this month, where Horan performed a show on October 2.

Sharing a video to Snapchat at the time, Payne said he and his girlfriend, US influencer Kate Cassidy, were visiting Argentina on holiday, adding they wanted to see Horan’s concert while in the South American country.

“I think we might just go and say hello [to Horan],” Payne said in the video.

“It’s been a while since me and Niall have spoken. We’ve got a lot to talk about. And I would like to square up a couple of things with the boy. No bad vibes or anything like that. But just, um, we need to talk.”

Cassidy had left Argentina to return home to the US before Payne’s death.

Stars shocked Payne’s death

A number of stars in the music industry have shared their shock and heartbreak over Payne’s sudden death.

“RIP Liam … I can’t believe this is real … absolutely heartbreaking …,” German DJ Anton Zaslavski, also known as Zedd, wrote on X.

“Sending strength to Cheryl and his son Bear and all the One direction Family,” Irish singing and television presenting duo, Jedward, wrote.

Singer Charlie Puth shared a series of posts on his Instagram Story where he remembered Payne for being “so kind” to him.

“May he rest in peace.”

Meanwhile, US media personality Paris Hilton shared: “So upsetting to hear the news of (Liam Payne) passing. Sending love and condolences to his family & loved ones. RIP my friend.”

Alberto Crescenti, head of the Buenos Aires’ public emergency medical services, confirmed the star’s death, saying he fell around 14 metres, suffering “very serious injuries incompatible with life”.
