Boney, 37, made rare public comments about her first marriage on the latest episode of the interview podcast Inherited. 

The former Today show presenter joked that she was indeed a “mysterious woman” when host Ruby Hall remarked that she didn’t know Boney had been married.

Boney described her ex-husband as “such a beautiful man” that she was “so, so lucky to have in my life.”

But she said she thought they probably got married too young – tying the knot in their mid-20s after being a couple since she was 19.

“I feel like I just wasn’t maybe mature enough or didn’t kind of know how to sort of deal properly with things that come up in relationships,” she confessed.

Boney didn’t give too many details – and didn’t offer any clues to her ex-husband’s identity – but did say that she didn’t blame anyone for the marriage not lasting.

“Sometimes things don’t go to plan – and that’s OK, that’s totally OK,” she said.

“When those things don’t go to plan, it shouldn’t mean that you love yourself less or you should feel like you’ve failed in any way.”

Boney revealed that she had a conversation with her grandmother in which she voiced that she and her then-husband were considering breaking up. She said that while other family members were “invested” in the marriage and wanted her to make it work, she got some wise advice from her Nan.

“I was like ‘Nan, I just can’t see this being forever.’ And she was like, ‘It’s OK, I get it. You’re gonna be OK.’”

Boney said that in the ensuing years, she’d occasionally wondered whether the relationship would’ve worked out if they were a little older or “better equipped.”

“But I wouldn’t say that it’s a regret, because everything that’s ever happened, good or bad in relationships since then, has always taught me something,” she said.

“I know that’s so hard to hear if you’re going through a break-up or a difficult time, but if you can learn something from it, then you have to be grateful for it.”

Meanwhile, Boney recently opened up about her new life in the UK, a year after announcing she was quitting her breakfast TV job.

The former Today news presenter, who joined Channel 9 in 2019, relocated to England late last year to take up an offer to study a Masters of Public Policy at Oxford University.

Speaking to Stellar, Boney gushed about her recent career pivot, which includes penning the new memoir All Of It, saying her life felt “kind of surreal.”

“I swear I’m not being disingenuous, but to be somewhere like Oxford and then to have written a book … I thought those things were for really exceptional people, or for people who weren’t me,” Boney, 37, told the Stellar podcast Something To Talk About.

“It seemed so far out of the realm of possibility. It just doesn’t feel like it’s happening to me. I feel like I’ve stepped onto a different timeline.”
