Chet Hanks, the son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, has done the best thing a celebrity offspring can do and shared some private text messages from his famous dad. He posted the exchange on his Instagram Story, delivering the kind of wholesome content we deserve.
The 33-year-old is best known for his short-lived rap career but has since become a working actor, nabbing roles in HBO shows like Empire and Shameless. He has amassed more than 500,000 Instagram followers and he is nothing like his wholesome dad.
Tom is all about glasses and sweaters, and Chet is all about sleeve tattoos, oversized caps, and flexing to show off his muscles.
Comical differences aside, Chet is close to his A-lister dad, who ultimately came to him to better understand the public feud between rappers Drake and Kendrick Lamar, which has been playing out via both of them releasing diss tracks.
Thankfully, Chet screenshotted their text exchange and posted it on his Instagram Story, revealing two very important things: one, Tom is as wholesome as you could imagine, and two, Chet calls his dad “Pops”.
Like any respectable boomer parent, Tom texted his son to understand pop culture.
“Big Main. Can you explain the Drake/Kendrick feud to me?” He asked at 7.30am.
Chet responded an hour later with quite a lengthy explanation that summarised the feud incredibly well.
“Yeah, so Drake and this other due J Cole have been saying they, along with Kendrick, are the big three in rap. Then Kendrick put out a song saying, ‘f**k the big three, it is just big me,’ initiating the beef,” Chet began.
He then went into the petty details about the feud, including how Drake had claimed Kendrick had small feet. In response, Kendrick made fun of Drake’s Canadian accent and rapped that he was a bad dad.
Chet also said Kendrick was winning the feud because he had released better music to make fun of Drake.
“Holy Cow! Those are fighting words. Are people taking sides? Who’s winning?” Tom replied.
“Did you not read what I said?” Chet asked and, like a typical millennial, added plenty of laughing, crying emojis.
The whole exchange occurred before 9am, so the two were getting into it before most people arrived at work.
The internet naturally was totally thrilled to have proof that Tom is exactly how you’d imagine he’d be.
“‘Holy cow’ is the exact reaction I expect to hear from Tom Hanks,” one wrote, and similar comments poured in.
“Epic.”
“That is hilarious.”
“This has to be the greatest father/son exchange of all time.”
“Why is this so wholesome?”
