CAITI Baker has taken out the NT Song of the Year Award after winning both the pop and blues and roots categories.

Her track, Make Your Own Mistakes, got the gong for pop and the best overall song, while Heavy on my Heart won in blues and roots.

Up-and-coming indigenous rapper Baker Boy, aka Danzal Baker, scooped up two awards at last night’s event at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.

Baker took home the urban/hip hop gong with Kian Brownfield for their track Cloud 9 and also picked up the Native Tongue award, scoring himself an all-expenses-paid trip to the Native Tongue songwriters’ camp.

It’s been a big week for the young rapper, who won a spot in the line-up at the National Indigenous Music Awards through the triple j Unearthed competition on Wednesday.

MusicNT executive director Mark Smith said the winners showed the strength of the songwriters in the NT.

Michael Hohnen and Nora Lewis were inducted into the Hall of Fame for their contributions to the NT music scene.

“This year’s inductees join an illustrious group of individuals that have made a long and significant contribution to the growth and strength of the NT music scene,” Mr Smith said.

“Both Nora and Michael have brought passion and commitment to supporting musicians both young and old, and we are honoured to welcome them into the Hall of Fame.”
