Book Lovers Day is just an excuse to pick up that book you have been wanting to read and give Pokemon Go a rest for a day.
Reading is one of the greatest, most rewarding and educational hobbies you can have. To really appreciate the day here are the five books to read today, or any day for that matter.
BURIAL RITES by Hannah Kent
Hannah Kent has done an amazing job in balancing suspense, historical accuracy and character development in an era not many could write about and have people immersed the entire time. The book tells the story of Agnes Magnusdottir, the last woman executed in Iceland.
THE BELL JAR by Sylvia Plath
It’s a classic and remains just as relevant now as it has in the past. Plath tackles mental health issues, societal injustice and mediocrity with fierceness and her main character’s descent into insanity is palpable.
HOME IS BURNING by Dan Marshall
This is a story told warts and all. The main character is not always likeable and the family dynamic is both depressing and strange which makes it work. As it is autobiographical you can’t help but feel the rawness of Dan’s words.
THE GIRLS by Emma Cline
There is no better writer than one that both understands the human condition and can write it so beautifully it jumps off the pages. Emma Cline captures realities and fantasy of an everyday girl caught in a savage web.
WHEN GOD WAS A RABBIT, Sarah Winman
It will suck you in with the story of a brother and sister spanning over four decades and keep you there with the familiarity of the story being told, the parallels to your childhood and Winman’s unique writing.
