THE Barunga Festival – one of the largest community festivals celebrating Aboriginal culture in the country — has been cancelled this year due to COVID-19 fears.

The decision was made to axe the event, which had already been postponed until September this year, due to the community’s COVID-19 concerns.

Skinnyfish Music events co-ordinator Brad Firebrace said this year’s resources will be committed to the return of a “bigger and better” festival from June 11-13, 2021.

“It is with great sadness that we inform you that Barunga Festival 2020 has now been cancelled,” he said.

“After consultation with the Barunga committee, we feel it is in the best interest of the Barunga community that it not go ahead this year.

“We look forward to bringing you a bigger and better festival in 2021!”

Organisers are working to make sure the 2021 festival will feature the world-class music, sport and culture that Barunga is known for, with a full program and further updates to be released later, he said.

Refunds for this year’s Barunga Festival are available for current ticket holders via Moshtix.
