THE rich history of Darwin’s beloved Star Picture Theatre has been remembered in a new artwork on its modern-day site.

Local artist Wayne Miles’ piece in Smith St Mall’s Star Village commemorates the history of the theatre through the Bombing of Darwin and Cyclone Tracy, complete with found objects and recycled artefacts from the time.

Star Village owner Tom Harris said he was glad to keep alive an important slice of Darwin’s history.

“We were a bit of a frontier, almost a wild west, and then we had these events that occurred which are significant to our development and I think they need to be remembered.,” he said.

“This site has been an important part of Darwin’s history, from the early days as a cinema through to now when it’s a great little walkway.”

Miles said the cinema had once been the “hub of entertainment in Darwin”.
