WINNERS LIST: Squeals of excitement greeted local and international artists on the red carpet and on stage. So who won, who lost, who shocked?

THEY have conquered the world stage and now Australia’s biggest musical exports, Sia, 5 Seconds of Summer, Iggy Azalea and Chet Faker have been crowned homegrown heroes at the 2014 ARIA Awards.

Australia’s elegantly eccentric global star Sia was a no-show for her big wins at the awards held at The Star in Sydney but special guest Katy Perry stepped in for the chronically publicity shy pop princess to accept Best Female artist.

“My girl, Sia,” Perry said.

“I will be going to Los Angeles on December 21 so I can take it back (to her).”

One of the most influential hitmakers in the world right now, Sia’s latest record 1000 Forms Of Fear also won Album Of The Year and best Pop release. Her viral clip for Chandelier, starring dancer Maddy Ziegler in Sia’s signature platinum wig, has had more than 330 million views and was awarded the ARIA for Best Video.

Our superstar pop rock band 5SOS kicked off the night opening the show with their performance of She Looks So Perfect.

Eardrums were blasted when it was announced that the band of the moment, 5 Seconds of Summer, were the winners of Song Of The Year for their international smash hit She Looks So Perfect.

The four lads were obviously excited, “Holy crap,” Michael said.

“This is the first award our fans have actually seen us get here,” Calum said.

Their adoring fans took to social media to congratulate the boys.

This year’s leading nominee Chet Faker, added Best Male Artist and Best Independent Release for his breakthrough No.1 debut album Built On Glass, to his three other artisan ARIA gongs.

Triple J’s Matt and Alex presented him with his first award and had dressed as Sia and Chet Faker with unforgiving leotards and facial merkin.

“I make music I have no idea why I’m here in a suit,” Faker said before noting of Matt Okine “There’s a dude in spandex next to me I can see his pecker.”

Accepting his second award he said, “You guys are probably getting sick of me,”.

“My high school career counsellor said I shouldn’t consider music as a career so...” Faker also gave a shout out to fellow nominee Vance Joy who he went to school with.

In the same week she beat Eminem to take out the American Music Award for best hip hop album, our first international rap superstar won the Breakthrough Artist gong at the ARIAs. Charli XCX, her co-star on the smash hit Fancy, collected the dangerously pointed trophy for Azalea.

“I’m gonna drop it off to her and she’ll enjoy it,” her Fancy co-star Charli XCX said.

Another Australian chart-topper to be rewarded for a watershed year was Geronimo hitmakers Sheppard, who were crowned the Best Group and apologised to the 5SOS fans for winning.

Geronimo chart slayers Sheppard won the Best Group award ahead of favourites 5 SOS.

“I am so sorry girls, I am incredibly sorry,” frontman George Sheppard said.

But it wasn’t just the newcomers who proved popular ARIA winners last night, with perennial favourites winning their respective categories again this year.

The undisputed kings — and now queen — of the kinds, The Wiggles made history to take out the Best Children’s Award for the 12th time although the 2014 win is a first for the new line-up which features the first female Wiggle, Emma Watkins.

They were earlier sought out for a selfie with fan Harry Styles.

Kasey Chambers marked her return to the music scene after taking a couple of months to recover from vocal cord nodules with her seventh Best Country Album win, including two with former husband Shane Nicholson.

“Bernard Fanning is one of the most talented people in the world but also a bloody nice guy” she said.

Chambers said she was given an expensive dress to wear by her stylist then chickened out and wore something “from my wardrobe from 10 years ago.”

International boy band megastars One Direction, who were greeted with cheers loud enough to rival an aeroplane received the fan-voted Best International Artist for the third year running. But this time they were here to collect it in person.

They performed their latest single Steal My Girl although they could have been singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and the punters in the room would have still screamed throughout the entire song.

The guys hugged it out before they took the stage.

“Thank you so much. It is incredible to be here in Australia. You have always been so incredible to us and we can’t thank you enough. Thank you, thank you, thank you,” Louis said.

“We can’t wait to get back on tour. See you guys in February,” the very coiffed Zayn said.

Best Adult Contemporary Album winners, the legendary Neil Finn and Paul Kelly closed the night with a mash up of their enduring anthems Don’t Stand So Close To The Window and Four Seasons In One Day.

They scored a 5SOS worthy scream as they started playing Four Seasons, an enduring classic.

“I would like to pay tribute to the adult standing on my left,” Finn quipped.

Other winners include DZ Deathrays who picked up Hard Rock/heavy Metal album and we’re very gentlemanly polite in their acceptance speech.

They thanked their mums who they joked got “way more drunk than we do”at their gigs.

And while there were plenty of winners and grinners on the night Molly Meldrum reminded us all about the important things in life.

A highly emotional Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum and Countdown were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

And while on stage to accept the award Meldrum wept as he shunned his moment to pray for cricketer Phil Hughes’ recovery noting “Our prayers are with you Phil and your family.”

Molly who was in a similar situation in 2011 after falling from a ladder in his backyard knows better than anyone else the battle ahead for Hughes.

A modest Molly said the ABC and Countdown’s producers and directors were responsible for the show’s success. “It wasn’t me, it was them,” Meldrum said.

“I’m like everyone in this room. I’m here because I love music. It’s my passion, it’s my life.”

Meldrum also thanked many of the Countdown stars who have passed away saying “they will shine on forever.”
