A Queensland state school in Brisbane’s south has topped nearly every NAPLAN metric after being the leading school in both 2023 and 2024.

It comes as the country’s peak assessment body – The Australian Assessment Curriculum Assessment Authority (ACARA) – has unveiled how every individual school ranked in NAPLAN this year, including how the top schools from 2024 fared.

We compiled a list of 50 schools – including the top 25 primary schools and top 25 high schools in Queensland from 2024 – to see how they compared in this year’s test.

Early access to the data seen by The Courier-Mail showed that Sunnybank Hills State School topped almost every metric compared to 2024.

The metrics students are tested on include writing, reading, spelling, grammar and numeracy with the highest possible score a 1000.

Sunnybank Hills State School principal Geoffrey Mill said differentiation in instruction was crucial to ensuring all children felt successful and supported.

“This means we not only challenge high performing students to move from an A standard to an A+, but also we challenge our C standard achievers to grow to a B standard and beyond,” Mr Mill said.

“I am very proud of our school community – the way our staff are always prepared to ‘go the extra mile’ and the genuine support we receive from our parents.”

Mr Mill said the school expected every child to learn and be “extended” regardless of their starting point.

“Our teachers drive a learning program with high expectations, a high level of engagement and importantly a healthy dose of fun,” he said.

“Our preparation begins in Prep with a strong focus on literacy and numeracy achievement.”

Fellow primary school frontrunners from 2024, Ipswich Grammar School and Citipointe Christian College continued to rank among the high achievers.

Top high schools from last year, including the Queensland Academy of Science and Mathematics, also recorded impressive results.

ACARA chief executive Stephen Gniel said the data allowed for a fairer celebration of improvement by considering a school’s individual circumstances.

“With detailed information on every school in the country, ACARA’s My School is the only website that publishes nationally consistent, school-level data that all Australians can see for free,” he said.

“The full range of data on ACARA’s My School website helps school leaders, teachers, parents and carers understand the full value and quality of a school.”

Teachers Professional Association Queensland president Scott Stanford said it was “a job well done” to schools pleased with their results.

“NAPLAN obviously shows that if people are teaching correctly and going back to the basics, whether or not students are benefiting from that sort of teaching,” Mr Stanford said.

Mr Stanford noted it was important to remember the purpose of NAPLAN.

“It’s a snapshot in time test,” he said.
