CHARLES Darwin University has recorded an increase in international students accepting study offers for Semester 2 despite the coronavirus crisis.

A CDU spokeswoman said offer acceptances were up by 6 per cent for Semester 2, compared to last year.

“International students remain enthusiastic about studying with CDU,” she said.

Universities across Australia are experiencing significant losses due to the decline of the international student market.

The University of Sydney is expecting a loss of $470 million this year, and the University of Queensland anticipates a loss of $240 million.

The spokeswoman said while it was too early to comment on financial losses, CDU was in a better position than its counterparts.

“Interstate universities have far greater difficulties to deal with than CDU in relation to international student numbers in the short term,” she said.

“The proportion of international students at CDU is significantly smaller than at southern universities.

“CDU is clearly going to be impacted if international students are unable to travel to Australia in the second half of this year for the start of Semester 2.”

The spokeswoman added CDU was developing plans to decrease the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, which included exploring assistance from the NT and Australian Governments.

“The university is working on a range of strategies and scenarios to minimise the impact and maximise the opportunities for students due to the current situation arising from the COVID-19 outbreak,” she said.

“CDU recognises that the Australian Government must take the actions it deems necessary to protect the whole community from COVID-19.

“We will certainly welcome the time when the travel ban is lifted.”
