High school to meet with students to discuss sexual consent

A DARWIN secondary school will coordinate sessions regarding the education of consent and sexual assault, after students said they didn’t feel the school was listening to their complaints

A DARWIN secondary school will coordinate sessions regarding the education of consent and sexual assault, after students said they didn’t feel the school was listening to their complaints.

The school has so far sent out two notes to parents regarding the issue, and encouraging students and their families to collaborate on “constructive and positive ideas on future actions” it can take.

“We would like to include our student body in these discussions to ensure we are listening to the feedback and ideas from all of our students,” the letter stated.

“Our first step will be having sessions with students next week where they can provide feedback and ideas on how we can create positive change within our school in relation to how all students can be educated and supported with issues such as consent, sexual assault and online abuse.

“As these topics may be triggering for some students, a supportive alternative environment will be provided for students who do not want to attend these sessions.”

Students at the school are planning a walk-out on Wednesday to “create an ongoing and supportive community where young women feel safe enough to share their stories of abuse sooner rather than later, in order to enact change”.
