Experts share top study tips ahead of Year 12s sitting their NTCET exams

TWO youth support workers have shared their top study tips to help them perform to their best. SEE WHAT THEIR TIPS ARE

AS Year 12 students across the Northern Territory prepare to sit the bulk of their NT Certificate of Education and Training exams from Monday, a pair of youth support workers have shared their top study tips to help them perform to their best.

Charles Darwin University manager student recruitment and events Marissa Briston said the NTCET exam period was always a stressful time for Year 12s and the coronavirus pandemic had only added to that pressure.

“There’s always been a perception that your Year 12 exams are the most important time of your high schooling, because it marks students finishing Year 12 and going on to the next stage of life. So there’s always been that added pressure on students to do well in their studies, get good results in their exams, get an ATAR and go to university,” she said.

“Then with COVID, it’s caused huge disruption and has added pressure on to what Year 12s would already be feeling at this time of the year.

“They’ve had to become adaptable and more resilient with all the changes that have happened … it would have had a big impact on them.”

She advised students getting ready to sit their exams to ensure they were in the right mindset to focus.

“You should set aside time to really focus on studying, and disconnect from all digital devices and distractions so you’re not jumping on social media and playing on the phone,” she said.

“Getting some exercise and eating healthy, all of that commonsense health advice will also really help. That will keep your mind clear and put you in the right mindset to perform well.”

Jade Gooding, mental health executive manager for Anglicare NT, which runs Headspace Darwin, said the service always experienced an uptick in calls in September and October, partly fuelled by exams. She said students could set themselves up for success by looking after their physical and mental health and seeking support if needed.

“The four key areas we focus on are … exercise, eating healthy foods for your brain, ensuring they’re getting enough rest and sleeping well … and having contact with their friends as well,” she said.

Both women also said if students didn’t perform as well as they had hoped, there was no need to panic.

“It’s not the be all and end all, and there are always other options,” said Ms Gooding.
