Being in isolation is no excuse to let your fitness slip.

Celebrity trainer Tiffiny Hall has urged Australians to get creative with their workouts.

With most of us stuck at home, the former Biggest Loser exercise guru said many home items can take the place of expensive gym equipment, especially if sports stores across the country are struggling to keep up with demand for weights, yoga mats and the like.

“Now more than ever it is important to stay healthy because we want to keep our immune system strong, our lungs strong and our hearts strong,” Hall told HiberNation.

“We can’t just give up exercise - this is not an excuse because the gyms are closed.

“You have to go harder than ever and you have got to get creative. Use your body as a gym or find bits and pieces around the house that you can use as weights to intensify.”

Laundry detergent, door stops, chairs, juice and milk bottles or a couch are simple everyday household items that can be used to mimic pumping iron.

“If you don’t have a resistance band for leg work or glute work, just tie a pair of stockings around your legs and it works fantastic,” Hall says.

She continued: “There are so many home items you can use to intensify workouts, from cans to using your stairs. Even putting on a backpack with some heavy schoolbooks can work to do some squats.”

Hall, 35, who is married to comedian and radio host Ed Kavalee, is one of many trainers providing their expert advice for free through her app.

She said everyone should clear 20 minutes a day to look after their physical and mental health.

“It is hugely important to look after our mental health because we are anxious, it is an uncertain time and people’s moods are dropping,” she explained. “This is about survival and to survive we have to be in a good headspace so exercise is really important and it helps create a routine.

“Plus the boost of endorphins from exercise is going to help us feel like we can cope. I would also urge people to stay connected. Just because we are isolated doesn’t mean that we are disconnected.”
