Revealed: Best work perks offered at 30 top Aussie companies

From dog parks in the office to sporting and cultural leave, take a look at the best employee benefits offered by some of Australia’s biggest companies.

Working from home reality revealed

Pet-friendly offices, sporting and cultural leave, employee share schemes and corporate discounts are the best job perks being offered by Australia’s biggest companies.

According to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data, nearly one in 10 Aussies have switched jobs in the past year alone, leading top-performing ASX 200 companies to ramp up employee perks in an effort to retain their workers.

Many organisations are also offering a variety of customised leave such as gender affirmation leave, public holiday swap, career break, defence force leave, and domestic violence leave.

Jo Jakobs, Director of Professional Talent at recruitment firm Randstad, believes Australian workers are prioritising personalisation of perks more than ever before and advises that companies ditch a “one-size-fits-all” leave policy.

“We are a country of people that like to take holidays and enjoy down time, so that is certainly something that’s more tailored more,” Ms Jakobs said. “Some employees may need extended parental leave, while others might prioritise mental health days or additional annual leave. Providing a leave bank where employees can choose the types of leave that best suit their needs fosters autonomy and wellbeing.”

A new Workmonitor survey from Randstad showed almost a third of workers are on the move and looking for better conditions, with a further 19 per cent considering doing so.

The results also revealed that employees are looking for happiness over security, with work-life balance ranking higher than pay.

Ms Jakobs says that purpose-driven work is also a major motivator with 39 per cent of Australians willing to take a pay cut for a job that contributes positively to society. Her advice to organisations is to empower employees to make an impact by allowing them to direct corporate donations to charities of their choice or take paid volunteer days.

As for flexibility in the workplace, Ms Jakobs believes hybrid working - a mix of remote and in office work days - is the “best of both worlds”.

“In the mind of employees, hybrid is what they want. At Randstad, we’re very much about hybrid. We know that the work we do requires us to be in the office, working with our colleagues, for at least two to three days a week,” she said.

“Other organisations have moved very much to a mandated approach. I think that might bring what I would call ‘passive resistance’ - people will do what they’re told, but not with happiness, not with joy. For a lot of people, they’re having to rearrange what they thought would be their norm. Families and working parents are generally most affected.

“So it’ll be interesting if the job market shifts again, back to what we would call a talent-led job market, then we would expect to see a pick-up in people leaving or making choices if they can get a similar role or similar pay that offers more flexibility.”

Some other work perks are: Qantas employees get access to heavily discounted standby flights, including 25 per cent off confirmed Qantas flights, and access to exclusive discounts on hotels and holiday packages, CBA employees get five days of ‘life leave’ a year as an incentive for people to recharge, Santos employees work on a nine-day fortnightly roster for its Australian-based staff in a bid to increase work-life balance and wellbeing, and Whitehaven Coal employee receive an impressive referral bonus of up to $4000 for referring successful new technical and operational employees.

Findings from independent research commissioned by Amazon Australia found that for one in five of Australian employees, cost of living concerns are discouraging them from changing companies.

Late last year, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced the work from home era was over, mandating five-days in the office for all corporate staff.

However, Director of HR at Amazon Pritho Saxena says the mandate does not mean there is no flexibility.

“It sounds like an approach which limits flexibility but that’s not the case. Flexibility has been built into each role,” Mr Saxena said.

“You would follow a commonsensical approach which is, ‘Hey, I have a sick child at home and so I need to be at home’ or you have a tradie visiting your home and you need to be there. If you need some deep research time and you want to spend time in a less distracting environment, do that from home.

“We are also a global company and interact with colleagues across time zones. We all have to manage our own schedules with that. So that’s where the flexibility comes in.”

One of the employee benefits that Mr Saxena is very enthusiastic about is the ‘Dogs At Work’ program, which was launched in 2022.

All Amazon corporate offices around Australia are dog friendly, and the company has even opened dog playgrounds in their offices.

“I have a four month old puppy and he can join the many dogs that come to our office on a regular basis,” Mr Saxena said. “We’re on the 10th floor (of Sydney’s Amazon headquarters on Market Street) and we have a dog park.”

Amazon will soon be launching their first dog playground at their corporate offices on Level 5, at 2 Park Street Sydney.

Aside from this work perk, Amazon also offers commuter benefits, where the company subsidies their monthly office parking costs or public transportation costs for eligible employees.

Amazon also offers their workers and eligible family members subsidised health insurance for hospital cover and extras, like dental or physio. Other benefits include life insurance, salary continuance insurance and up to 20 weeks paid parental leave.
