Acting Lord Mayor George Lambrinidis said council’s smart city project had shown users previously logged into Wi-Fi in and around the 38 locations during meal times.
“We did have a recent trial which showed the highest usage was between 12pm and 2pm and between 6pm and 8pm, the time when people are usually having some down time, sitting down and enjoying a meal or a coffee,” he said.
“This is a great way to activate the city, it gives the opportunity for people to come into the city, use the Wi-Fi when they’re having a coffee, sitting down having a meal or even just walking around.
“It allows them to explore the city, so there’s benefits to the shop owners, benefits to the people themselves who want to come in and explore the city and use the different apps we have to look around here and the fitness apps to look at the equipment on the Esplanade.
It really allows for a connected city.”
