THE owners of Throb nightclub, which remains closed due to coronavirus restrictions, are on a mission to diversify by launching a new open-air venue at East Point Reserve.
Concept plans for Throb on Point Coastal Sunset Lounge, which is proposed to be built facing the sea at Dudley Point, were revealed last night.
The venue will include a pool, large dancefloor and two huge disco balls spinning on towers at both sides of the stage area.
A Darwin Council spokesman said they had provided “full support” for the project with the provision of a permit to occupy its land to operate Throb on Point (TOP).
Owner Tim Palmer said without the new outdoor venue, Throb’s future looked “very bleak.” Mr Palmer said their current Smith St venue couldn’t reopen and comply with social distancing rules due to a lack of space.
“The Darwin Council, NT Government, Tourism NT and NT Major Events all support this post-COVID venue,” he said.
“We are now seeking the community’s support for our venue which pivots starkly from the Throb known or perceived to one for family, community and arts events.
“We plan to operate the venue at East Point each dry season with Throb on Smith St closed, then move back to Smith St for the Wet.”
Mr Palmer said Pee Wee’s planned to provide all catering and food services via a food truck at the venue or special pre-sunset menus at Pee Wee’s itself.
“Only two nights of the week will the dancing go beyond midnight and it will be managed with security and crowd control to the highest standards,” he said.
“After 9.30pm patrons can only enter and leave the Reserve via a TOP bus shuttle to either the Taxi/Uber rank at the closed Reserve Gate or be dropped back to their vehicles at one of the carparks near Lake Alexander.
“Under no circumstances can patrons leave the venue and wander the Reserve or walk home.”
