THE Northern Territory political landscape will soon be home to a new conservative force.

Member for Blain, Terry Mills on Tuesday submitted his application to register his Territory Alliance Party with the NT Electoral Commission.

Mr Mills said he was “overwhelmed” by the response to his new party.

“Two weeks ago I announced my intention to establish a new political party for the Territory that would squarely focus on good governance for ordinary Territorians,” he said.

“Since then, more than 200 people have come forward to join Territory Alliance.

“There is a large appetite for real change in how we do politics and government in this place.”

Mr Mills said the 200 members came from all walks of life and included a number of ex-Labor and CLP members.

Most had never been involved in a political party before, he said.

“We have reached a critical point in the NT where people have had enough of the shenanigans of the existing political parties,” Mr Mills said.

“People just want the Government to run the place properly.”

Mr Mills said a number of people had also offered to stand as candidates in the 2020 Territory election.

“I am highly encouraged by the calibre of people putting their hands up to contribute in some way or another to Territory Alliance,” he said.

Mr Mills was chief minister for seven months before he was rolled by his then-CLP colleague Adam Giles in 2013.

He re-entered parliament in 2016 as an independent member and had flirted with a number of political parties since.

Mr Mills previously said that the new conservative-leaning party would seek to give disaffected voters an “alternative approach”.

He said the Territory Alliance would be guided by regular meetings with “authentic” community groups.

Party registration can take up to seven weeks.
