THREE key mining projects proposed for the NT, which have the potential to create several thousand new jobs, would leap towards final investment decision if a railway siding was built where the Plenty Highway intersects the Ghan Rail line, the proponent of the Territory’s next copper mine says.

KGL Resources executive chairman Denis Wood, who is in Darwin next Wednesday to address a Mining Club luncheon, said he had promising discussions with former federal minister for Northern Australia Matt Canavan before his recent resignation from federal Cabinet.

Mr Wood will give an update at the Darwin Mining Club luncheon on KGL Resources’ proposed $200 million Jervois copper-silver-gold project northeast of Alice Springs.

The Jervois project will create more than 650 construction and operations jobs.

“We have to truck the minerals to Alice to get it to the rail and so will other potential mines such as Arafura Resources’ Nolans Rare Earths project and Thor’s Molyhil project,” Mr Wood said.

“I had discussions with the former federal minister for Northern Australia Matt Canavan with a view that North Australia Investment Facility funding would be well used on building a railway siding on the Plenty Highway, Ghan Railway crossing.

“A common user rail siding would be a great source of encouragement to investors for all three of these significant Territory projects.

“It would cut hundreds of kilometres off a round trip for our trucks to Alice Springs. It is a chance for NAIF to provide serious help to three important Territory mine projects.

“Having a rail siding also takes these trucks off the highway to and from Alice Springs.”

Mr Wood said D-Day was approaching for the Jervois project.

“My goal is construction start the middle of this year, which will present local opportunity,” he said.

“The long-term projections for copper are brilliant. It has a huge role to play in the renewable energy sphere.

“It doesn’t matter what green energy you look at, whether it is generating power or electric cars, they all use more copper per kilowatt or car than petrol or coal-fired. As you go into solar cells and windpower you need more and more copper per kilowatt hour.

“We’re not going to go green without copper.”
