Special Report: Medical data and technology company HeraMED has reported a new record number of active and accumulated users or mums on its HeraCARE platform, which remotely monitors pregnancies.

HeraMED (ASX:HMD) said more than 3800 expectant mothers had been onboarded onto its proprietary HeraCARE platform as at September 30, 2024, demonstrating the growing adoption of its digital maternity care solution.

Active users also continue to reach new records with more than 710 mothers currently having their pregnancies managed through the HeraCARE cloud-based platform.

HeraCARE helps enable healthcare providers to manage their maternity patients remotely with personalised care plans via a mobile app and a smart kit of connected devices including HMD’s clinically validated, in-home foetal and maternal heart rate monitor HeraBEAT.

That ensures expectant mothers are engaged, informed and well-supported and enables healthcare professionals to provide the highest quality care with early detection and prevention of potential risks.

HMD said the increase in HeraCARE user growth was continuing to build its evidence base and value proposition that the platform improved the existing standard of care in pregnancy.

Florida launch adds users

The primary driver behind the current surge in user numbers had been the successful launch of HeraCARE at Broward Health in Florida with 207 pregnant mothers successfully onboarded in the first 100 days. Broward Health is one of the 10 largest public healthcare systems in the US and includes five hospitals, across more than 50 locations and offices, and a team of over 1,800 nationally recognised doctors delivering in excess of 5,800 babies annually.

The company said during this period significant enhancements to HeraCARE had been undertaken in defining care plans to better support patients with specific conditions including:

  • Chronic hypertension
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Mental health both for antenatal and postpartum
  • Financial hardship; and
  • Low risk pregnancies

HMD said customised care plans now form the backbone of how customised care was being provided and managed using HeraCARE.

With care models and workflows now defined, the company intends to support an increased number of mothers on HeraCARE with Broward.

HeraCARE continues to lead to several time-critical interventions for prenatal and postpartum mothers, HMD noted, leading to better outcomes across Broward Health’s various sites by assisting with care and delivery protocols.

“This rapid adoption in a clinical setting highlights the HeraCARE’s ability to seamlessly integrate into existing healthcare systems and provide valuable support to both patients and healthcare providers,” HMD said.

The reimbursement landscape in Florida continues to evolve, with reimbursement for postpartum care for mental health monitoring now available for mothers for up to 12 months post-delivery.

This development has the potential to dramatically extend the length of time mothers could be on the HeraCARE platform, as well as the revenue opportunity potentially available to HMD.

Constant improving capability

HMD said it continued to improve the capability of HeraCARE to ensure it was absolutely fit for purpose for the evolving needs of users and healthcare providers.

Recent enhancements include:

  • Extended Postpartum Care - Multiple postpartum care plans have been expanded from six weeks to 12 months following birth, aligning with new reimbursement opportunities.
  • Spanish Language Support – HMD has successfully launched a Spanish language version of the HeraCARE platform, with infrastructure built for more language options soon.
  • More additional features including more than 150 smart notifications across care plans for escalation and continuum of care; and
  • Enhanced group messaging capabilities such as an integrated medication management reminder system

Grant strategy for additional funding

HMD said it had implemented a comprehensive grant strategy framework and continued to establish a robust approach to identifying and securing sustainable funding for its initiatives.

The new strategy emphasises collaborative partnerships and strategic alignment.

HMD said it was actively engaging with partners to develop grant applications that reflect its shared commitment to improving maternity and pregnancy outcomes.

The company is currently working on three grant applications in Australia and Europe.

Managing director and CEO Anoushka Gungadin said it was exciting for the company to collaborate with customers that share an aligned vision to change maternity and pregnancy care outcomes.

“A key pillar in our strategic plans has been to be customer-first and ensure HeraCARE is fit for purpose,” she said.

“Our platform enhancements have focused on workflow refinement, smart notification configuration, chat and telehealth implementation, care plan design, and notifications for complex care populations.

“Seeing our user growth underpinned by this customer focus is very rewarding.”

Gungadin said HMD had also garnered further interest from other Florida-based health systems based on its success at Broward. It is actively pursuing these leads.

“We are at the beginning of our commercialisation journey, and as our pipelines expand, our evidence base continues to grow,” she said.
