LARRAKIA Elder Richard Fejo has been appointed the new Darwin Waterfront Corporation chairman by Chief Minister Michael Gunner.

Mr Fejo said he was looking forward to working hard in the job to achieve the corporation’s goals and community expectations.

He said he was also looking forward to being a role model for young Indigenous people.

“I’m quite thrilled and excited to have an opportunity to go into a space in leadership that I hope opens doors for Aboriginal people in the future to take up leadership roles,” Mr Fejo said.

Former chairwoman Tracey Hayes temporarily stepped away from the role to run in the Territory election but was sent a letter from Mr Gunner after the vote count stating she would not be reappointed.

Ms Hayes lost the election to the Chief Minister in the seat of Fannie Bay.

She had another year to run on her contact.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the role, it was a challenge but a positive challenge,” Ms Hayes said.

“It’s such a significant part of the Territory and our ability to attract tourists both domestic and international.”

Ms Hayes said to not be reappointed acted as a deterrent for others who may be considering a run in politics.

“It’s an unfortunate deterrent for those that put their hand up for public office,” she said.

Mr Fejo was informed on November 13 by Mr Gunner that he had been appointed.

Mr Gunner, in his letter to Mr Fejo, outlined the importance of the Darwin Waterfront for the city.

“The development of the Waterfront has reshaped Darwin’s image both as a tourism and business travel destination, and in terms of the wonderful lifestyle locals enjoy,” he said.

“Over the coming years, I hope to see the Waterfront continue to develop for the benefit of all Territorians.”

Mr Fejo said he would continue in his role as chairman of Larrakia Nation, the Senior Elder for Flinders University and sit on the Darwin Council’s council for international relations.
