A prototype hotel suite is being built to deliver a peep into Darwin’s new $200m luxury Westin hotel that will be built at the Darwin Waterfront.

Local Darwin firm, M & J Builders has been awarded the contract to deliver the prototype suite.

The hotel will have 201 rooms and is expected to open in 2022.

The prototype room will be constructed offsite in Winnellie.

The luxury hotel developers Landbridge says the prototype will be used to test the design and set the quality benchmark expected of a Westin Hotel for the guest rooms across the whole project.

“This is where we begin to see the design lifting from paper to real life and we can demonstrate the look and feel of the rooms to the future Hotel contractors,” the company said.

“A prototype room is an important step in the project’s development, and is being built to test the design and set the quality benchmark expected of a Westin Hotel for the guest rooms across the whole project.

“Landbridge has been working closely with Westin Hotels & Resorts, the operator of the new hotel, to refine the design and internal layout of the building and its beautifully appointed rooms.

“We are very pleased to once again engage local contractors and continue our commitment to ensure opportunities for qualified local businesses and suppliers.”

Landbridge said the first stage works of the nine-storey hotel continue to progress well with the construction of the sea wall and pedestrian footpath well underway.

“The prototype room is an important step in the overall process,” it said.

Marriott International executives have promised the $200m luxury Westin Darwin Hotel will bring thousands of new tourists to our city and deliver a new standard of luxury accommodation setting a new benchmark in hospitality excellence.

Development Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific senior director Richard Crawford said the full arm of the Marriott International network would be used to put Darwin on the international destination map.

Folau claims bushfires and drought part of 'God's plan' to punish Australia

Mr Crawford pointed to the fact Marriott International is opening a hotel every 14 hours for the next three years somewhere in the world.

He said the arrival of Marriott International plugs Darwin into global marketing machine

“This means a multitude of people are seeing Darwin flagged along with Times Square, Jakarta, the Gold Coast and global cities,” he says.

Stage One works on the luxury hotel are underway. This includes the construction of a sea wall which will provide protection to the development from storm surge and includes the fully accessible foreshore public pathway along the complete length of the site, as well as diversion and relocation of site services and drainage.
