THE number of jobs in the NT has returned to pre-COVID levels as the Territory continues to lead the pack as one of the fastest recovering jurisdictions in the country.

Australian Bureau of Statistics has released payroll jobs and wages data for the week ending March 12, 2021, marking a full year since the coronavirus pandemic began.

The single-touch payroll data, which counts employees and not employers or the self-employed, shows the number of NT jobs has increased by 3.6 per cent since the pandemic began.

Payroll wages in the Territory have also increased by 4.9 per cent over the year.

The data shows the jobs held by women have increased by 3.4 per cent since the pandemic begin, while jobs held by men are only up by 0.6 per cent.

The public administration and safety sectors, along with the health and social assistance sector, has grown since the pandemic with the number of jobs in those industries in the NT up 8.6 per cent and 5.5 per cent respectively.

Hospitality NT chief executive Alex Bruce said many hospitality businesses geared towards local customers had fully recovered since the pandemic began and now needed more workers.

“Going forward, our biggest limitations remain workforce and snap domestic border closures,” he said.

Chamber of Commerce NT chief executive Greg ­Ireland said big infrastructure projects in the Territory had been boosting business confidence and driving growth again.

“This data is probably evidence that we were at a pretty low point from an economic standpoint when the pandemic began,” he said.

“The numbers should take a hit with the end of JobKeeper going forward, but I think things will balance off as some industries ramp up hiring this Dry.”
