Opposers to RSL Esplanade clubhouse plans not convinced this is the end of their battle for a green Esplanade

OPPOSERS to the Darwin RSL’s proposed Esplanade Clubhouse are remaining guarded, despite the club withdrawing their application and Darwin Council “wishing them well” in finding a different home.

Darwin's Esplanade Stoush

OPPOSERS to the Darwin RSL’s proposed Esplanade Clubhouse are remaining guarded, despite the club withdrawing their application and Darwin Council “wishing them well” in finding a different home.

Darwin Film Society deputy chairman John Schier said while aldermen had indicated they would favour greening over the carpark, he remained sceptical.

“We’re guarded, we’ll remain vigilant but are encouraged by the alderman who are supportive to greening it,” he said.

“It’ll only be a proposal, whether it gets the backing remains to be seen. While they’re alluding to it, it’d be a great outcome.”

The Planning Action Network convener Nicholas Kirlew said he was wary of the situation but more so on how the council would act on the situation.

“We’re still concerned that the City of Darwin makes no acknowledgment of the 11,000 signatures that came through as a petition,” he said.

“The only risk they see is a risk to reputation. Clearly there’s a disconnect between the City of Darwin and the community.”
