Concerns over proposed NT alcohol store

WITH the Territory’s pubs and clubs expecting bumper crowds this festive season Licensing NT officers will be hitting the pavement to ensure licensed venues are doing the right thing in relation to the sale, supply, service and promotion of alcohol.

And you won’t be able to miss them in their bright high viz jackets.

The Manager Compliance, Liquor, Tobacco and Community Gaming Bernard Kulda has warned licensed venues to meet their obligations so that patrons can enjoy end of year celebrations safely.

Breaches of legislation or licence conditions can include fines or closure of a venue.

It’s a warning that well known publican and restaurateur Jason Hanna has no argument with.

“When you have people like Bernard and his team the key thing is they are approachable and they are there to work with you, but they are also there to make sure you don’t step out of line. You do that and you’ll get a slash of the cane,” Jason said.

“We’ve got our rules and regulations to work with and we all have to do the right thing and make sure our patrons are also. And the focus will be greater this year with so many people staying around town for the festive season.

“This has been a great season … it’s been really busy and there is no doubt Bernard’s licensing team has been kept on its toes.”

Benard Kulda has a team of 12 compliance officers who work across the Territory.

“They will be working with businesses across the Territory to ensure they are operating safely and lawfully … so the public can enjoy safe and vibrant pubs, clubs, bars, restaurants, cafes and events,” he said.

“A common mistake licensees make is assuming everything is okay if they have been inspected before, but it is important that licensees keep on top of the legislative requirements so they can meet their obligations under the Northern Territory Liquor Act 2019.

“Several ways in which licensees can stay compliant and avoid warnings and fines, is to regularly review policies and procedures in place and, ensure their staff are trained and briefed regularly.”
