A PROPOSED takeaway alcohol outlet in Durack has been knocked back by the NT Licencing Commission.

The Gateway Select Wine, Beer and Spirits, owned by Little Cashy Pty Ltd, applied to move its business to the Fairway Waters shopping centre in Durack in July 2019.

However, the NT Liquor Commission finally made a decision to refuse the application on Monday.

The proposed new premises had been vacant for some time at the suburban shopping centre and was 300sq m in size, about 50sq m larger than its Gateway premises.

The application received 24 objections during public consultation, which notably included Palmerston council chief executive Luccio Cercarelli and NT Police’s Palmerston Superintendent Anthony Deutrom.

Palmerston Alderman Tom Lewis, who also objected to the application, said he thought introducing a takeaway alcohol outlet in Durack would not be in the best interest of the community.

He said there were already alcohol-related issues in the proposed store’s surrounding area, including the Marlow Lagoon Recreation Reserve, and he was worried it could be a “magnet” for problem drinkers.

“There were only 173 residential properties within a one km radius of the former Gateway premises whereas there were 512 within the same radius of the Fairway Waters site,” Dr Lewis said.

“I think in general alcohol takeaways are fine but I think this one would have had too much of a negative impact on the area.”
