FIVE key work sectors will be targeted in a new campaign to attract skilled workers to the Northern Territory.

The Territory government digital campaign targets skilled and semi-skilled workers in the nation’s big three markets – Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne – and New Zealand.

NT Jobs and Training Minister Paul Kirby said the campaign will raise the profile of the Territory and promote it as a desirable and attractive place to live, work and do business.

“It aims to entice skilled workers to the Territory and support businesses to attract and retain more people,” Mr Kirby said.

“The Territory government has worked with industry to understand their work demands and recruitment challenges.”

The list of target industries identified is:

• Automotive sector (mechanic, fitter, electrician, vehicle painter)

• Hospitality sector (Cook, chef, baker, hotel or motel manager, cafe or restaurant manager, waiter supervisor)

• Education sector (University lecturer, VET teacher, early childhood teacher, childcare worker, training and development professional)

• Welfare sector (community worker, aged and disability carer)

• Health sector (specialist doctors, registered nurse, dental assistant, psychologist)

• Construction & manufacturing sector (welder, carpenter, metal fabricator, plumber)

“We’ve listened to the recommendations of the Territory Economic Reconstruction Commission’s final report,” Mr Kirby said.

“We’ve listened to business owners.

“We know that attracting new workers is a critical part of growing our economy – it means more people, more customers, and ultimately, more jobs.

“Jobs for locals will always come first for the government, but when we need to attract workers from interstate, we want to attract the best.

“If you ask me, the Territory is the best place in Australia to work and absolutely the best place to live. This is about letting the rest of the country know that.

“The Migrate NT campaign also aligns with our Jobs First Plan – supporting small businesses to adapt and rebound from COVID-19.”

In August 2018 the government tried new ‘Welcome to the Territory’ incentives as part of its Northern Territory Population Growth Strategy 2018 to 2028.

Territory businesses were urged to sign up to take advantage of the Welcome to the Territory financial incentives to help woo staff from other states to hard-to-fill roles.

Senior management as well as entry-level roles were included on the priority list across a range of industry sectors that include pastoralism and agriculture, finance, construction, engineering, aviation, human resources, IT and hospitality.

Incentives available included:

  • Local Spending Benefit (up to $1250)
  • Five Year Retention Bonus (up to $8000 for a couple with two children).

The scheme was dropped after 12 months with only 124 people accessing the incentives.
