Katherine ‘out of control’ with youth crime

Employees at separate Katherine service stations were allegedly attacked as a group of mostly female youths went on a rampage just after midnight Sunday morning.

At 1.15am a security guard at the Caltex OTR service station on Bicentennial Road in Katherine contacted police to report a group of up to 15 youths throwing rocks at the building.

The security guard locked himself inside the premises and attempted to secure entrances inside but police said one of the girls used a claw hammer to first smash in, then tear out, an entire floor-to-ceiling window pane.

Rocks were thrown at the security guard as members of the group entered the service station and allegedly stole ice creams from a display refrigerator.

The security guard responded by discharging a fire extinguisher at the group, who then fled the premises.

The youths are then alleged to have walked from OTR to the BP service station on Katherine Terrace where they discharged a fire extinguisher into the face of a female employee before stealing the cash register containing approximately $400.

Northern Watch Commander Acting Senior Sgt Brendan Molloy said Katherine general duties officers arrested three females aged 14 who are expected to be charged with aggravated robbery.

Four other youths located near the crime scene were “returned to responsible adults”.

The male security guard suffered soreness but escaped serious injury after being struck with rocks and the female BP employee was treated at the scene by paramedics.

Sen Sgt Molloy said detectives would use security camera vision to determine if further arrests would be made.

In November, a Katherine OTR employer was forced to hide in a secure area after youths smashed the premises’ front glass doors and stole cigarettes.

Police have urged anybody with information to contact 131444 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
