Thousands in Alice Springs to benefit from NBN rollout

Central Australia is set for landmark upgrades to the NBN. Read how many businesses and residents are set for a win.

Labor ‘delivering’ on its vision of a ‘world-class fibre network’ through NBN

Households and businesses in Alice Springs have received a major connectivity boost with more than 10,000 premises now able to order a full fibre NBN network upgrade.

Part of increased federal government connectivity spending, Gillen, Braitling, East Side, Araluen and Larapinta have the highest number of available upgrades around Alice Springs.

Fibre can deliver speeds 18 times faster than the average copper broadband connection and provide more reliable service, according to Commonwealth data.

Federal government figures show the NBN can save users more than 100 hours and $2580 per year in travel time and working from home costs.

Lingiari MP Marion Scrymgour said federal Labor was getting on with the job of delivering high-quality internet services that provide faster speeds and more reliable connections.

“I am pleased this critically important communications project is completed and residents in my electorate are now able to access superfast NBN fibre internet connections,” Ms Scrymgour said.

“Full fibre access gives households the opportunity to connect to a world-class internet service, enjoying faster speeds while working or studying from home or streaming their favourite shows.”

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said the upgrades were a key milestone in the government’s $2.4bn election commitment to expand full fibre access to a further 1.5m premises nationally by the end of 2025, including more than 660,000 in regional communities.

She said the delivery of world-class broadband infrastructure was complemented by the government’s $480m investment in NBN fixed wireless network and NBN Sky Muster to boost internet speeds in regional and rural areas.

“The Albanese Government is committed to making sure more Australians have access to better and faster broadband that meets the needs of our increasingly digitalised world,” she said.

“Our strong investment ensures more and more households have access to this technology – unlocking greater social inclusion and economic productivity through faster, more reliable internet.”

“I look forward to more families and businesses across Alice Springs, the Northern Territory and the rest of the country benefiting from this higher speed option.”
